Our mission statement: The San Juan Community Library is dedicated to promoting enthusiasm for reading, research, and cultural enrichment.

Founded in 1987, the San Juan Community Library is one of two lending libraries in Puerto Rico and has 26,000 books in Spanish and English in its collection. Family membership costs $25 per year, or approximately the price of a new hardbound book. The Library is run by volunteers and encourages community and individual participation for its upkeep and day-to-day operations. It has a Board of Directors (please click on the subject to view our current list of board members) and an Executive Director, Ms. Connie Estades. The San Juan Community Library offers classes for children and adults such as yoga and art, workshops, free Wi-Fi, computers with free internet access, and many other services. For information on how to volunteer or become a member call us at 787-789-4600.

The year 2008 marked the coming of age of the San Juan Community Library, since we reached our 21st birthday. We are situated in San Juan, Puerto Rico,  in a cultural center originally created as a meeting area for three urbanizations: Bucaré, Apolo, and Alto Apolo. The name of this center is an amalgam of these three sites: BUCAPLAA.

The San Juan Community Library opened in 1987 under the direction and skill of Rosie Booth. Our dream of a lending library started on two folding tables and several metal chairs. A brief glance at our current main reading room reveals the long, successful road navigated by all our library's directors, board of directors, members, and volunteers. In 2001, we officially changed our name to the San Community Library at BUCAPLAA, and in 2010 became the San Juan Community Library.  We are a 501(c)(3) public charity.  All donations to the library are deductible for federal tax purposes.

Today we have:

28,000 volumes in English and Spanish, maintained within the following collections: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Science Fiction, Puerto Rico, Children's Fiction and Young Adult, Reference, Audio-Visual (DVD's, CD's, and books on tapes), Oversize Collection, Home Schooling, Water color, and a Seven-Day Collection (current releases, both fiction and non-fiction).
